Aine Ní Mheará, Alana Doherty Brennan and Chloe Clifford recently joined fellow QQI Level 5 Early Learning and Care students on an unforgettable 14-day Erasmus+ mobility to Cyprus, combining meaningful work placement experience with a rich cultural journey.
This exciting Erasmus+ opportunity gave the students the chance to step beyond the traditional classroom setting and experience first-hand how early learning and care is approached in another European country. During their time in Cyprus, the students engaged in work placement activities that allowed them to observe, participate in, and reflect on professional practice in an international context. This kind of practical experience is invaluable for learners preparing for careers in Early Learning and Care, helping them to build confidence, adaptability, and a broader understanding of the sector.
For QQI Level 5 Early Learning and Care students, Erasmus+ offers so much more than travel. It is a unique opportunity to enhance vocational skills, develop independence, and strengthen communication and teamwork in a real-world environment. By participating in an international mobility, students gain new perspectives on child-centred practice, inclusive approaches, learning through play, and the importance of cultural awareness in education and care settings. These experiences deepen their understanding of the profession and help them to see how quality early years practice can be shaped by different cultural and educational traditions.
The placement also supported the students in developing key personal and professional competencies. Living and learning abroad for two weeks encouraged resilience, responsibility and self-belief. Navigating a new country, adapting to a different workplace culture and engaging with new people all contributed to the growth of the learners as confident young professionals. These are the kinds of transferable skills that benefit students not only in their studies, but also in future employment and progression to higher education.
Alongside the work placement, the cultural aspect of the mobility added another important dimension to the experience. Immersing themselves in Cypriot life allowed the students to broaden their horizons, appreciate cultural diversity and build a stronger sense of European citizenship. Through this shared journey, they also developed lasting friendships, memorable experiences and a deeper appreciation of how learning can take place far beyond the walls of a classroom.
Erasmus+ continues to open doors for learners by giving them opportunities to grow academically, professionally and personally. For students in Early Learning and Care, these mobilities are especially valuable, as they reinforce the importance of empathy, communication, creativity and inclusion in working with young children and families. Experiences such as this help shape thoughtful, capable and internationally minded practitioners for the future.
We are incredibly proud of Aine Ní Mheará, Alana Doherty Brennan and Chloe Clifford, and of all of the QQI Level 5 Early Learning and Care students who embraced this opportunity with enthusiasm and professionalism. Their participation in this Erasmus+ mobility to Cyprus reflects the ambition, openness and commitment that are at the heart of learner success.

Erasmus+ is not just a trip abroad — it is a journey of professional development, cultural discovery and personal transformation.
